Annual St Kevin's vs Roncalli Cricket Exchange

Simon Davenport —

St Kevin's were hosts in Oamaru for the Annual Cricket Sports Exchange

Two Roncalli Cricket teams traveled to Oamaru on  Wednesday 20 of February to take on St Kevins in their annual inter-school fixture.

The 1st XI lost the toss and were asked to bat on a slow-low-tricky pitch. They patiently batted out their 50 overs to finish at 226 for 9. Ben Davenport top scored with a well compiled 84 and was well supported by William Johnson (56) in an 118 run partnership for the 4th wicket.

The effort with the ball to defend the 226 total started superbly with Hayden Kerr bowling their opener on the first ball. Hayden had a handy northeast breeze coming in over his shoulder and ended up with the awesome figures of 8 overs - 4 maidens - 6 runs - 4 wickets. He was nicely supported by Nick Goodwin 3.5-1-16-3 and Jarrod Phillips 5-0-17-2 in a bowling and fielding effort that restricted St Kevins to 59 all out, in the 23rd over. A superb win for the 1sts.

The juniors batted first and were all out for 68 in the 20th over, with only Alex Payne (17) and Conor Boult (16) making double figures. St Kevins then ran down that total for the loss of only four wickets, in the 14th over. James Atwill, Lukas Kelliher, Matthew Cairns and Conor Boult all took a wicket each. With time left in the day the Juniors played another, 15/15 game. Batting first they scored 64 for 8 - Matthew Cairns 20 and James Atwill 11.However, St Kevins got up again and passed the total 5 wickets down in the 14th over - Jack Cotter taking 2 wickets. This was good experience for the young cricket team who have not played many games together.

A special thanks to Simon Davenport and Brendan Cairns for taking the day off to coach the teams for the day, your support is much appreciated.
