Special Character Update
“Whoever has a heart full of love always has something to give” Saint John XXIII (Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli)
Aroha Freezer
We are beginning a new initiative here at the College called the ‘Aroha Freezer’. This service project aims to create meals and food for people in our community and the wider Timaru community. The aim is to create meals and have ready made meals in freezer when the need arises.
We are asking for your support by way of donations of food or time.
If you would like to contribute any non-perishable item of food (flour, sugar, cans of food or fruit) vegetables, or a grocery voucher or meat to be used to create meals please contact Sally Betts on s.betts@roncalli.school.nz or one of our Special Characters leaders Lucy l.hinde@roncalli.school.nz, Nelly n.tate@roncalli.school.nz, or Zannyx z.geary@roncalli.school.nz with any questions or contributions. We would be happy to accept what you can offer. Items can be left at the office. If you would like to donate your time, we would also be grateful. In the next week or two we will email out a sign up sheet should any student or parents help cook or create a meal or two after school one afternoon.
Weekly Mass
Roncalli College will be providing the opportunity for students to attend the Week Day 9am Mass at St. Thomas’. This initially will be for Year 12 and 13 students. If your son or daughter wishes to attend Mass transport will be provided by the College. Mass begins at 9am and the van will depart at 8.50. Students will be back by 9.30am for Period 2. There is a sign up sheet at the office for students to record their names. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of faith and celebrate Mass with members of our community.
Sisters of Mercy Visit
This week a group of students visited the Sisters of Mercy in Christchurch. As a part of our ‘Flex Day’ service class students spent the day with Sisters of Mercy learning about their experiences of teaching and working in our community.
The students were also treated to a tour of the Te Manawa Atawahi - Catherine McAuley Centre. In this centre Sr. Mary Catherwood showed the students past history and memorabilia of Catherine McAuley and Sisters of Mercy in our Diocese.
Sr Dianne also gifted Roncalli College a beautiful image of the former convent built by the Sacre Coeur Sisters which was then then taken over by the Sisters of Mercy when they arrived in Timaru in 1936. We continue to treasure the legacy you left here at the College and remained committed to the Mercy charism taught to us all by Catherine McAuley.
Loaves and Fishes
The ‘Loaves and Fishes for Parishioners' continues to be a successful service and outreach initiative in our school community. Many thanks to the senior students and staff who are giving of their time and energy to help with this very important service to our Parishioners and local community in these cooler winter months. Look forward to seeing you all next Wednesday, August 2 at midday in the Parish Centre.
