Marian Mehrtens —

Before starting Gateway this year, I was really excited for the opportunity Gateway could bring me, it can provide a lot of good things and sets me up with good skills for the workplace.

After researching career’s, I attended three work experience taster days at Zest, Little Wonders and Timaru District Council.  I chose the Timaru District Council for my work placement where I work as a receptionist for one day every week.

I am doing an online Office Executive course through “The Learning Place", I complete the theory part in class and at home in my spare time and I have practical components to get signed off in my workplace.  The course is worth 15 level 3 credits which count towards NCEA plus a certificate of achievement which will be great for my CV.

Next year I am hoping to find a full-time job, if this doesn't happen I am going to enrol in a beauty therapy course at Ara Institute instead of doing year 13.

I am really enjoying my time being part of the Timaru District Council team, it is such good experience and I'm really hoping I get something good out of it.
