Refrigeration Engineer / Plumber

The careers I started off researching and doing taster days on were plumbing at Breen Plumbing, joinery at Barrett Joinery, and refrigeration at Masterchill.

After my three taster days I then selected one to focus on for the year, refrigeration was something different and I found it interesting so I decided to do my work placement at Masterchill. The job at Masterchill involves installing heat pumps and air conditioning units in people's homes and servicing heat pumps to make sure that they are running correctly. At Masterchill they also fix car and truck air-cons, I haven't seen this part of the job yet but it seems very interesting.

The Industry Training Organisation that I am registered with is Skills Organisation. The unit standards that I do with Skills are mostly theory but there are a couple of practical assessments that I have to complete. Once we have finished our assessment the teacher will go over it then it will be posted away for marking. All of the assessments that we do count towards a future trade qualification this means we won't have to do these assessments once we get into the workplace and it will save me money. They also give me NCEA level 1/2/3 credits at an achieved level.

My plan for next year is to leave school and look for an apprenticeship.
