Roncalli Tennis Success
Tennis is coming back...
There is great interest in Tennis this year at Roncalli. Four teams entered the Aoraki Secondary School Tennis Championships held on 17 February 2022. What a day! the weather was a little cold to start but turned into a fine day to see our girls taking on the challenge.
Jess Aldridge and Maia Liu - Roncalli Gold team, won their Cup Competition. They played exceptionally and are very talented young ladies. They were both undefeated in their singles matches. Maia played a very fast final, knocking out her opponent, while Jess was three sets up when her opponents confidence began to wain. Congratulations to both Jess and Maia.
Congratulations also go to Tyla Kelly and Bridget Moffitt who came third in the Cup competition. This was their first event representing Roncalli and their first time playing together as a team. They had some hard games (and the longest doubles match) and Tyla played the longest singles match of all our players. Fantastic achievement girls.
Tallulah Rooney and Mya George had a great day and really showed that Roncalli spirit, winning a couple of their matches and supporting our girls in the finals. they certainly have improved from their first tennis match. The most improved team was Kate Simpson and Jayda Richardt, who although did not win any matches, gained the most from their first experience playing tennis for Roncalli.
Jess, Maia and Tyla formed the team that represented Roncalli College at the South Island Secondary Schools Tennis Championships over 26-27 February. A last minute call to cancel and then reinstate the event by the organisers meant that many teams pulled out. This left five teams in the Cup Championship.
The team played outstanding winning overall. Well done ladies, we are in awe of your incredible sportsmanship and talent.
