Aoraki Secondary Schools Senior Tennis Teams Tournament

The Aoraki Secondary Schools Tennis Championships was held on Tuesday 13 February.

Roncalli entered a boys and girls team in the tier 2 non-qualifying grade, but unfortunately due to the low number of entries this grade did not take place. We decided to combine the four players into a team and enter the tier 1 competitive mixed grade.

Team of Max Taylor, Sam Young, Sophie Wilson and Teisha Holden.

Round one was against St Kevin’s, both Max and Teisha won their singles 6-4, 6-3 respectively, Sophie had a close tie with her opponent narrowly going down 7-5. Both boys and girls won their doubles combinations 6-1, 7-6. Roncalli were winners overall 4-2. Round two was a tough battle against a strong Ashburton College side, Sophie and Teisha did well to pick up two games each in their single clashes. Ashburton won the tie 6-0 and were the overall winners of the mixed grade, qualifying for the South Island event. The last round of the day against Mt Hutt, only doubles were played, the girls won 6-1 and the boys lost 2-6, it was tied at 1-1 but Roncalli were winners on countback of games 8-7.

It was great to have Roncalli represented in this Aoraki event. The players did well stepping up at short notice to play in the qualifying grade especially with Max and Sam both only year 10 students competing against senior players.
