Learner Profile - Principled

Lindy Kelvin —

Being principled is to act with integrity and honesty, respect, with a strong sense of fairness and justice, and with respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere. We take responsibility for our actions and their consequences.

What do our IB Leaders think?

"Being someone who will act honestly and knows how to be fair and listen to other peoples opinions. They respect their own peers cultures and ideas.
This is my idea of what being principled means." Tanisha R

"To me, principled is managing yourself and being independent. By doing stuff to show your parents and other adults your cool skills. This is my defintion of being principled to me." Dinuthi E

How can parents help to develop students who are principled at home?

What you do as a parent matters. How you treat and respond to your child should come from a knowledgeable, deliberate sense of what you want to accomplish.

  • Connect behavior to character - Being able to admit to a mistake even if it means criticism or disapproval shows a commitment to truth and fairness.

  • Provide opportunities for your child to make their own decisions, discuss the consequences, positive and negative, of their decisions.

  • Read and tell stories in which the story characters demonstrate making principled decisions

  • Discuss how being principled is a life long commitment and a well sought after characteristic to have.
