Give someone a hand up to Literacy

Gail Sellers, Literacy Chair —

Literacy Chair, Gail Sellers is asking each Rotary Club to consider a small Literacy Project for their community.

I believe that each club would have “a reader” and that this person could be encouraged to lead a small project.

This could be as simple as:

  • taking a number of picture books to the hospital as gifts to newborns;
  • collecting paperbacks for your local Youth Shelter;
  • ask if the Police Station would like a dozen books for their Soft Rooms;
  • magazines for waiting rooms; and so many other ways to give someone a hand up to Literacy.

The beautiful trophy pictured above was donated by Nea Steward Dore of the Yeppoon Rotary Club when she was Literacy Chair. Nea was a lecturer at the CQUniversity and travelled the world speaking at conferences and delivering lectures at universities. She passed away suddenly in 2014.

The trophy will be presented at the District Conference.

Clubs should be considering their submissions now.
