Hillmorton students lend Cashmere Rotarians a helping hand

Liz Hubbard, Cashmere Rotary —

Cashmere Rotary enlisted the support of Hillmorton High School students when they stepped up to lend a hand to farmers in Dunsandel and Hororata last month.

Members of the club put their heads together to find some way of helping farmers clean up following the May floods.

They made contact with the Rural Support Trust and were allocated the task of clearing fences at two farms.

Equipped with spades, gumboots, the band of 11 Rotary helpers and the Hillmorton students who were on an adventure work experience programme, set to work on the laborious job of clearing fencelines of debri left after the floods.

Cashmere reports the farmers were very thankful for the assistance.

After a good day’s work on a early-winter day, the Cashmere Rotary team headed home after providing community service to those in need. It was an experience shared with the Hillmorton students who got a taste of rural life and awareness of our environment.
