Bishopdale-Burnside Junior Speech Competition

Keith Walker, Bishopdale-Burnside Rotary —

We were thrilled to be able to continue with the staging of our very popular Junior Speech Competition, even though schools had been locked down for a few weeks during their busy year. The change of timing had affected some schools but we still managed to attract 14 schools entering a total of 110 students. The competition involves students in Year 4 to Year 8.

This very popular annual event was first instigated by a past member of our club Bill Chudleigh, 32 years ago. Bill's vision and initiative continues to be one of the highlights of our Rotary Club's year and the standard of the presentations never ceases to amaze us.
Twelve of our club's members were judges for the semi-finals at Cotswold School this year which also reflects the ongoing commitment from our club towards the event.
The Finals, held once again at Breens Intermediate, were done under strict distancing and sign-in regulations this year resulting in just one adult per participant being allowed to attend. However,  this in no way affected the enthusiasm or quality of the performances.

The winners of each section also performed their speeches to our members in early November which is always one of the highlights of our club's calendar.
The year 8 winner, besides receiving a $60 Whitcoulls voucher like all the other section winners at the Finals, was presented with the Bill Chudleigh Cup at this meeting.
The ongoing success of this event is only possible thanks to the support and enthusiasm provided by the teachers and parents of these talented young people.
