Litchfield-Palmerston, little but mighty!

Valerie Wilkie, Secretary —

A busy and engaged club, making a difference to our community. Did you know that more than 1 in 5 Australian children have experienced food insecurity in the last 12 months?

I would like to advise of three upcoming projects/events the Club is holding during September.

STORYTIME:

The Club will be providing all school libraries in the Palmerston and Litchfield Municipalities, including the Palmerston and Taminmin Community Libraries, with a selection of beautiful children’s books, for their weekly Nurserytime (0 – 1 year olds) & Storytime (1 – 5 year olds) Sessions.

The books have been sourced locally by local Children Books’ Authors, to celebrate Rotary International’s Basic Education and Literacy Month commemorated world-wide during September (Indigenous Literacy Day – 2nd September and World Literacy Day on 8th September).

WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY:

Also, leading up to and on World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September, the Club will be holding four (4) Suicide Prevention Awareness / Information stalls within the Litchfield Municipality.

This project is aimed mainly towards Males 40+ to raise awareness, and provide contacts available 24/7, due to the alarming statistics in the rural area, this will the Club’s 3rd annual project for World Suicide Prevention Day!

EAT UP AUSTRALIA:

We will also continue with our monthly commitment to the Eat Up Australia project. Children frequently arrive at school without the food they need to fuel their growing bodies and brains. Missing out on lunch has a big impact on children, with hunger causing fatigue and poor concentration. This commonly leads to learning difficulties and behavioral problems in school, with disadvantaged children falling further behind their peers. Many children come from homes experiencing financial hardship, substance abuse, violence, homelessness or are refugees. We are committed to providing cheese sandwiches to all the eight schools in our area, so that they can be frozen and toasted when required.

PLEASE take the opportunity to READ FURTHER on this wonderful initiative in the attached article below.

Thank you all!

Valerie Wilkie
