Why Ronald McDonald House?

Debbie Daley and Bernie Cross —

Many Rotary clubs in District 9560 support Ronald McDonald House because they know that access to health in Regional Queensland can add to the trauma of an incident or diagnosis.

The Rotary Club of Rockhampton Fitzroy's Trivia Night on Saturday 17th raised $?, but equally importantly it raised the profile of this important charity and the connections that Rotary Clubs can have with the McDonald team leaders in your town. Go down and chat them up!  Together, we can serve to change lives!

Proceeds from the night will be donated to Ronald McDonald House. Most of us would know of someone who has unfortunately had to use one the the Ronald McDonald Houses. This was a passion of Past President Kathryn Ward and Erin Marsh.

YOU CAN STILL DONATE to their fundraising efforts. All Donations over $2 are deductible and you can get a Receipt to claim on your next Tax Return. To ensure your Donation is recorded for our Event please use the following details for Bank Transfer.

Ronald McDonald House SEQ Inc BSB 034 002 ACC 869 645 Reference ED 124764

Please then send a message to our page, providing the name required for the receipt, email address and a phone number. Thank you in advance.

Please let me reintroduce you to a special family who have needed to use the Ronald McDonald House facilities for three weeks recently. Three weeks accommodation in the city is never going to be cheap. The need for this city accommodation will always be there because our local hospitals do not offer the specialist that some aliments & accidents require.

โ€œ9 weeks ago Cooper had an accident with boiling water from the Jug whilst we were cooking tea burning 11% of his body! We were rushed off in the Royal Flying Doctors within hours to the Queensland Childrens Hospital in Brisbane to treat and recover from his burns."

An accident like Coopers that happens in the blink of an eye is actually more common then you think. What we REALLY felt we needed to do in light of this, was share what exactly you need to do if your child does spill hot or boiling water on themselves.

So here goes :

1. ๐Ÿ’ฆGet them under cool running water as quickly as possible, and keep them there for atleast 20minutes. Donโ€™t use water that is ice cold or running too hard as it can lead to further burning and send them in to shock.

2.โ˜Ž call 000 if the burn area is larger then a 50 cent piece.

3.๐Ÿ’ฆOnce saturated and cooled, you can remove the item(s) of clothing, once its been soaked through with cool water. If the child wears a nappy, make sure none has been absorbed, and remove if so.

4. ๐ŸฉนAfter 20 minutes, place cling wrap over the burns (do not wrap it tightly, simply lay it over) to stop the nerve endings from hurting as this stops the oxygen getting to them.

5.๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜Ž Stay Calm

Thankfully I knew what to do which the doctors believe was a huge factor in Coopers quick recovery. So make a mental note in case you ever need it and share with your friends that have little ones!

"We spent 3 weeks in Brisbane living between the Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House SEQ and both facilities are fantastic! In that time Cooper underwent 3x debridement surgeries and 3x bathing procedures to help his burns heal. It was such a relief to get away with no skin grafts given they were 3rd degree burns! From sponge baths, to redressing wounds, to irrigating dressings, to multiple medicines and more we have learnt lots about burns and how far the treatment has come over the years and thatโ€™s why we wanted to share with you.

Thankfully with the help of modern medicine, incredible doctors and nurses, and Coopers ridiculously amazing, happy personality we are on the other side, fully healed and beyond grateful! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ˜‡"

If you ever get the opportunity to support QLD Charities make sure you add The Ronald McDonald House SEQ, The Queensland Childrens Hospital and The Royal Flying Doctors to your list ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’›โ€

In this instance our club is raising funds for Ronald McDonald House so please feel free to get involved by making a donation & supplying details for your receipt. Thank you, on behalf of all those who have used Ronald McDonald House or anyone else who may unfortunately need to stay there in the future.
