Typhoon Goni known locally as Rolly, hit land with 225km/h (140mph) winds and torrential rainfall – ripping off roofs, taking out power and damaging buildings. It’s the most powerful storm to hit the Philippines since Haiyan in 2013.

Mike Greenslade, CEO Shelterbox Australia —

Many thousands were evacuated before the storm hit but the process was complicated by the coronavirus. Families now face the double threat of having nowhere to live other than over-crowded evacuation centres, whilst also trying to protect themselves from the deadly virus.

Early reports suggest that 90% of homes have been destroyed in the town first hit by the storm.

Shelterbox is responding

We have a strong in-country presence and aid stored locally. We are working with local contacts and Rotarians to understand how we can help. Rotary in the Philippines play a key part in our work in the country.

Electricity, phone and water are cut off across the affected area, making information gathering more difficult.

The Philippines has one of the worst coronavirus infection rates in Southeast Asia. This latest disaster will make conditions significantly worse for millions of people.

We are also monitoring another storm, Astani (Siony), due to make landfall on Thursday 5th November.

Please donate today to support families in need in the Philippines.

Many thanks for your support.
