Mike Greenslade CEO —

Disasters don't stop, and neither do we.

HAITI - EARTHQUAKE
Due to the security situation within Haiti, we initially deployed a team to the neighbouring Dominican Republic. Some of the team moved across to Haiti and visited Les Cayes, the area targeted for distribution and conducted training with our partners. They have since relocated to Curacao. Having a team in the region has been critical in better understanding the situation and logistical challenges, forging partnerships and maintaining contact with the coordination mechanisms.

We are partnering with Habitat for Humanity Haiti, utilising our preparedness work undertaken in the region with our global partnership with Habitat for Humanity International. Currently, we are planning on reaching 2,000 households with shelter and essential items. This will involve using a mix of pre-positioned stock from Panama and procuring additional stock to fill gaps.

Last Saturday, the first distribution occurred in the Grand’Anse department to 300 families. Habitat for Humanity Haiti reports that the distribution went smoothly with no security issues.

YEMEN - CONFLICT

After nearly seven years of conflict, Yemen remains the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. 20 million people - over 66% of the country’s 30.5 million population - are in need of humanitarian assistance, 13 million of which are at risk of starvation. With more than four million forcibly displaced people as of the end of 2020, Yemen has the fourth-largest internally displaced population due to conflict worldwide.

ShelterBox intends to partner with the Benevolence Coalition for Humanitarian Relief (BCHR), a national NGO, in response to the unmet shelter needs in the Marib governorate.

ShelterBox is currently working with BCHR to develop the response parameters, including determining the appropriate aid package and reach. Though the precise intervention has not yet been defined, the primary objective of this response is to reduce the vulnerabilities of families who have been displaced by conflict in Yemen by providing emergency shelter support.
