Books for Babes

Anne Chater, Theodore Rotary Club —

The Rotary Club of Theodore is (now) a club of 4 members, however a small club can make a big difference!

Liz and Keith Shoecraft, Brian Price and Anne Chater continue to support Rotary International and to make a difference within the community as opportunities present themselves.

One long term and ongoing project that RC Theodore does is Books for Babes, a project to encourage literacy in the home. This project is now in its 10th year with an average of 25 to 30 books posted each year.

With a secure link, the names of newborn babies associated with Theodore Medical are used to post suitable early childhood books to the babies. Many babies are from other districts and towns – whose parents choose to use the GPs of Theodore Medical. As a result, these books end up far and wide. The books and postage are paid for by the Rotary Club of Theodore with the selection, addresses/packaging organized by Anne Chater who is the Operations Manager of Theodore Medical.

A self-adhesive book label is placed on the inside cover of the book with the baby’s name and date of birth written on and with reference to Rotary. A letter is also included in the package, explaining the arrival of the book.

We know from feedback that this project is valued by the families receiving the books. We often receive either written or verbal messages of thanks. In rare circumstances, these books may be the only acknowledgment of the birth of a baby. No matter the circumstances of a family, every baby associated with Theodore Medical receives a Book for Babes.
