Nauman embraces Rotary causes and family on a visit back to his homeland
Discover how our End Polio Chair had a World's Greatest Meal, immunised a child, and visited a district grant project in Pakistan.
A trip back to his homeland provided an opportunity for District End Polio Chair Nauman Abbasi to share a World's Greatest Meal and visit a rural school project in Islamabad, supported by Cairns Sunrise and Rosanna Rotary Club in Victoria.
"I was welcomed by headmistress Sadaf Aquib and all the children and staff," Nauman said.
"It was amazing to see, personally, the great improvements made through donations, including a District Grant.
"Of course, the school has ongoing needs and an appeal for more furniture and a preschool room has been answered immediately by the Rotary Club of Cairns Sunrise and Rosanna along with four personal donations.
"The long-term aim is a solar system and possibly more toilet facilities due to the growth of the student cohort; there are 54 children on the wait list at the moment."
Nauman said he was contacted by friend and District Governor Nominee Salman Mubarak from the Rotary Club of Multan Cantt.
"We had a World's Greatest Meal together and planned to take part in the upcoming National Immunisation Day which became difficult due to the postponement of the first and second date, but I did manage to achieve my aim third time lucky," he said.
"Meanwhile our RI PolioPlus Chair Michael McGovern was in Islamabad, meeting with senior partners and formulating further plans to eliminate polio.
"The upcoming summer will be the high transmission season, so it is critical that vaccination proceeds unimpeded.
"Some wastewater samples are positive to the polio virus both in adjacent Afghanistan and northern Pakistan."
Nauman said his visit to his home city of Multan, 1,200 km from the capital, was a 'culture shock'.
"After five years of living in Cairns, it was a culture shock to encounter the high population and resultant crazy roads of my home city of Multan in Punjab, Pakistan," he said.
"I was overwhelmed with extended family wanting to see this rare specimen of an Australian/Pakistani.
"Having taken presents filling the best part of two suitcases, I was understandably popular with the 15 children in the immediate family."
Nauman said his overall reflections would 'take longer'.
"I welcome discussion or questions in the upcoming months regarding the End Polio progress and outlook or the Apex School Project as education and health are keys to progress," he said.
"I'm happy that I achieved three of four of my Rotary aims vaccinating a child, visiting our rural school to personally see the effectiveness of our donations, and holding a World's Greatest Meal to help End Polio."
Thank you, Nauman, for your passion for the End Polio cause and to the Rotary Club of Cairns Sunrise for the difference you are making to young lives in Pakistan!
