NRL Cowboys House Interact Club charters on 10 June 2022

Karen Kankkunen —

The Rotary Club of Townsville Sunrise has energised and inspired young Indigenous leaders ages 12 -18 through service and encouraged them to become responsible global citizens by supporting the chartering of their new Interact Club.

What a pleasure it was to celebrate with these young people and their Principal, Rochelle Jones, at NRL Cowboys House on 10 June 2022, and support the chartering of their new Interact Club.

The Townsville Sunrisers were there in force, with Terry Moore, President Stan Neale, Andrew, Churchie, and Miles all doing their bit. The Rotary Club of Townsville Sunrise has sponsored and supported the creation of this new Interact Club.

The Rotary Club of Townsville Sunrise has been supporting Cowboys House over the past few years by building firepits, yarning circles, attending Gala events, and purchasing the newly formed Interact Club a pie van trailer from which the club can engage in community and fundraise for projects.

Removing distance as a barrier to accessing quality secondary education is the aim of this facility.

NRL Cowboys House opened in 2017 and provides supported accommodation for 104 young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from some of North Queensland’s most remote and educationally disadvantaged communities, enabling them to access quality secondary education opportunities in Townsville.

The facility is a purpose-designed and culturally respectful environment, providing the stability and support students need to be able to fulfil their potential while building long-lasting friendships and life skills along the way.
