Discovery Coast Rotary shares some love!

Karen Kankkunen —

Our latest fundraising effort went to help Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Our little community, made up of many small villages such as Agnes Water, Seventeen Seventy, Captain Creek, Baffle Creek and Deepwater, Lowmead and Rosedale, is an hour and a half from any hospital, and when children are really ill, families need to travel even further Brisbane for life saving treatment. This is very expensive and stressful on families in rural communities.

Ronald McDonald House Charities is an independent charity that relies on the work of volunteers and the financial support of individual and corporate donations.

Without such generous contributions, they would be unable to keep their doors open to families in need 365 days a year. Thanks to the public, they've been able to continually expand their operations to help more families and communities Australia-wide, and Discovery Coast Rotary wanted to support this.

There are many ways we can all contribute to their vital programs including their Houses, Family Rooms, Family Retreats and the Learning Program.

Discovery Coast Rotary ran the BBQ at our Markets on Easter Sunday for a Rota McBurger Day, to raise money for Ronald McDonald House. We decided the chaos and mayhem of running a busy market AND the community BBQ on such a busy public holiday was worth it. With all hands on deck and some Rotary friends, we manned both. Phew!! A busy morning ensued with plenty of chaos and lots of laughs, and a huge number of cheese burgers being cooked

We were thrilled when local mum, Nikiha Davies said hello to the Discovery Coast Rotarians at the Market BBQ. She was with her daughter Peyton, and twins Nash and Reuben who are 2. She and her husband stayed THREE months at Ronald McDonald House in South Brisbane when the twins were born at only 25 weeks gestation. She was so excited to see us raising money for this worthy cause that she came and shared her story.

Mum, Nikiha said,  "Great work Rotary! I have no doubt Ronald McDonald House will be honoured to take your donation. Families like ours are forever indebted to those who put in the effort to raise money for these charities so thank you!"

It is those moments that make our lives in Rotary so worthwhile. This is why We Serve to Change Lives.

And the great news is that we made a profit $1254.00, which will go to Ronald McDonald House.

It was a great effort by everyone in our community and tourists, but especially by our little club's members who put in a huge effort on what WAS Easter Sunday.
