Rotary Club of Cairns Trinity sets sail

Cairns Rotary sails into Australia Day celebrations in the name of inclusivity

Tim Bentley —

Discover how the Rotary Club of Cairns Trinity joined with an all-abilities sailing club to celebrate an inclusive Australia.

On Australia Day 2023, the Rotary Club of Cairns Trinity, in association with Sailability Cairns, proudly hosted a free family event at the Cairns Cruising Yacht Squadron at Trinity Inlet embracing not only the Australia Day opportunity to Reflect, Respect and Celebrate but to enjoy inclusivity of culture and ability.

Sailability provides sailing for people living with a disability. Their home is the Cruising Yacht Squadron, whose members are incredibly supportive.

The Australia Day event was a chance to recognise the important service Sailability provides and the pivotal role that its team of volunteers play in the lives of many disabled people in our community.

Reflecting this, and our FNQ lifestyle, sailing and boating were the order of the day with plenty of action on the water.

More than 170 people enjoyed a sail out on the dinghies and other boats including the Coast Guard's new vessel, Rotary Spirit.

Back on land, a local DJ and Tjapukai dance troupe provided us entertainment along with plenty of other family activities.

In all, more than 600 people from a diverse cross-section of the Cairns community enjoyed the four-hour event.

Family fun at the Cairns Trinity Rotary-Sailability Australia Day event

All funding for the day was received from the National Australia Day Council and was spent on local sponsors, suppliers, artists and families, as direct support of our regional economy.

Additionally, the funding assisted Rotary Club of Cairns West and Rotary Club of Mossman with their events.

Great work, Rotary Club of Cairns Trinity! You are Rotarians of action, passion and inclusiveness!
