Fellowship fun

Karen Kankkunen —

Annually, Discovery Coast Rotary hosts an event with its sponsor club, Rotary Club of Gladstone, and this year we ran a mystery Progressive Dinner and bus tour.

Discovery Coast Rotary hosted a March mystery Progressive Dinner, expertly organised by Wade Hughes.

It was lots of fun as the bus drove us around. It was special to share the night with lots of Rotarians from Gladstone and Calliope, AG Russell Cooper from Rocky, the Gortons from Yeppoon and AG Bob Beer and Liz from Hervey Bay. The Rotary Club of Gladstone is our sponsor club and we continue to build strong connections and have fun with them.

We were also joined by this year by our past YEP student Gemma Nicol and her friend, Deljay. A huge thank you to our bus driver Pauline for getting into the swing of the night, and creating an amusing drive!

It was a real mystery. The bus headed north first, with all of us guessing different destination options. We ended up with nibblies at the Bowls Club, mains at the Golf Club and a talk by the owners, Joanne and Les Lawrence, on their decision to buy the land, plan and build a golf course 20 years ago. " But it was probably 20 years before its time", said Les.

Our final destination was at Yvonne Thompson's Discovery Coast Wildlife Rescue for a talk, cuddles with some babies,  rehydration and dessert. Locals do seem to really love their slice of paradise, but we are also keen to keep it that way. Yvonne is a passionate volunteer and wildlife carer. She’s Agnes Water’s very own Dr Doolittle and renowned in our villages. Discovery Coast Rotary has supported Yvonne in this quest over the last eight years.

When we dropped in for dessert we found house / animal shelter full to the brim with a menagerie of creatures, especially the baby possum.

We learnt that Yvonne has devoted most of her life to caring for injured wildlife, and the outside marques were perfect for mingling beside a lovely fire.

It was fellowship and fun at Rotary best: learning some new things about the town; good food and drink;  lots of laughs with a wide variety of people and interclub collaboration.
