MY ROTARY STORY

President Peter Zhuang, Rotary Satellite Club Sunnybank Hills —

My (Peter Zhuang) Rotary Story. How was the Sunnybank Rotary Satellite Club of Sunnybank Hills established?

Article by President Peter Zhuang, Rotary Satellite Club Sunnybank Hills

I started knowing Rotary since 2005, my friend’s wife was the President of the local Rotary Club. I often bought some of their handmade articles and homemade Christmas pudding cakes to support their fundraising activities.

November 2020, I attended a couple of breakfast meetings of Sunnybank Hills Rotary Club, Qld D9620. I decided to apply for membership and I became a member in December 2020.

In April 2021, it was my first Rotary Sausage sizzle at Bunnings Rocklea, which are an important fundraising method for Rotary Club. I kept attending several volunteering shifts during the weekend because I love the feeling of the teamwork and fellowship during the shift. I know it is part of the spirit of Rotary.

The weekly routine meeting agenda is very reasonable, every Rotarian has opportunity to take a different role to get different experience. It is very good for leadership training, I personally recommend more people to join us to feel it.

Since I became a member the Club President Chris Ellis talked with me several times about establishing a Satellite Club in Sunnybank, which most of members are Chinese heritage, but I refused it because I was very junior in Rotary and needed to get more knowledge of Rotary. Early May this year, Chris suggested it again, I felt confident this time. After several chats with my several friends, especially Liza Fu, who kept encouraging me.

In May 2021, I invited Chris Ellis, James Wang, Liza Fu, Tyrone Kim, Christina Li to have the first meeting at Parkland Restaurant. During the meeting, Chris guided us to make a plan to recruit new members for our new Satellite Club.
In June this year, Liza and I were the volunteer team of organizing Car Show and Shine at Mt Gravatt showground. It was very successful. More than 100 vintage cars turned out. Through the event, we got the knowledge of how the Rotary works.

In July, Liza officially became a Rotarian. More and more new members were happy to join our club. Soon after, we achieved the membership requirement of a new Satellite Club.

In relation to establishing a new Satellite Club, we got strong support from District 9620, DG Wendy Protheroe and PDG Jitendra Prasad. On 3rd September, Sunnybank Rotary Satellite Club of Sunnybank Hills was officially registered.

On 17th August, first group new members were officially inducted with PDG Jitendra Prasad.
On 24th August, the second group of new members were officially inducted with DG Wendy Protheroe.

25th Sept 2021, it was a big night for our Satellite club. Sunnybank Hills Rotary Club and our Satellite Club held a dinner function to celebrate Rotary's 100th Anniversary  and the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival celebration at Golden Lane Restaurant. More than 200 people attended. At that function, Sunnybank Hills Rotary Club President Chris Ellis officially announced that Sunnybank Rotary Satellite Club of Sunnybank Hills was officially approved.

District 9620 Director Membership Jitendra Prasad issued certificates and badges to 19 members from different backgrounds. Finally, President Chris announced Peter Zhuang as the first president in Sunnybank Rotary Satellite Club of Sunnybank Hills.

We started our routine Satellite club meeting on 26/09. We meet every second and fourth Tuesday night at Runcorn Tavern. At every  meeting we have a few members from Sunnybank Hills Rotary Club to attend to guide us, especially Chris Ellis and Brett Frazer.

We started with every new member’s presentation to share their family, business and knowledge of Rotary.

We have had lots of activities, such as BBQ at Bunnings Rocklea, Movie night, volunteer working for Donation in Kind.
We independently organized a successful fundraising concert on November 14.

This my Rotary story.
