The dinner will coincide with the club’s 60th anniversary of service to the community. This special evening, at the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, promises an inspiring reflection on peace, community, and the power of Rotary.
For a quarter of a century, the Sandy Bay Rotary Club has marked Rotary International’s birthday with the World Peace and Understanding Day dinner, bringing together community leaders, Rotarians, and friends to reaffirm their commitment to global harmony. This year’s event also celebrates six decades of making a difference in the local area and beyond. PDG Ross Carlyle, President of the Club, says “Sixty years of service is a testament to the dedication and passion of this club’s members, who have worked tirelessly on countless projects, embodying the Rotary motto of Service Above Self.”
The distinguished guest speaker for this year’s dual celebration is David Brill AM ACS. A veteran cinematographer, whose career has spanned decades and continents, David Brill has borne witness to some of the world's most catastrophic international conflicts for almost 50 years.
With fellow iconic cameraman Neil Davis, David was among the first Australian media personnel on the ground to cover the Vietnam War where he captured a balanced view of both sides of the conflict.
He also captured the fall of the Soviet empire while he was stationed in Moscow from 1988 and covered both Gulf wars.
Turning the focus from war to peace for the dinner, David will draw on his experiences documenting conflicts and their impact on individuals and communities. His insights offer a powerful reminder of the importance of striving for peace in our world. An exhibition of photos and equipment will be on display prior to the dinner.
The 25th World Peace and Understanding Dinner is not just an opportunity to reflect on the past; it is also a chance to look forward and reaffirm Rotary’s commitment to building a more peaceful future. It will be a celebration of the Sandy Bay Rotary Club’s enduring commitment to service, and an inspiring reminder of the vital role Rotary plays in fostering peace and understanding around the globe.
The Sandy Bay Rotary Club invites you to join them for this momentous occasion. Together, we can celebrate sixty years of service, mark a quarter-century of promoting peace, and renew our dedication to creating a better world.
