Shiba High School 24th Annual Visit
T. Grinter, Dean of International Students
Last week we celebrated the 24th annual visit from our brother school from Tokyo, Japan. This year, we welcomed 24 enthusiastic students and their dedicated teachers, who spent nine days living with Kiwi families and immersing themselves in the life and culture of Raukura.
Throughout their stay, the Shiba students fully embraced the spirit of our school. They learned the powerful school haka, tried their hand at Māori carving, and experienced New Zealand-style cooking. In the classroom, they explored a range of subjects, played rugby alongside our students, and bravely stepped out of their comfort zone to improve their English and connect with new friends.
But the magic of the exchange wasn’t just felt by our visitors—our own Year 10 and 11 students, as well as the host families, were just as impacted. From shared laughter in the classroom to bonding over weekend adventures and lasting friendships were formed. The connections made during this visit went beyond cultural exchange—they created memories and relationships that will be treasured for years to come.
A heartfelt thank you to all the host families for opening your homes and hearts. Your generosity made this experience truly special for our Japanese guests.
