Kapa Haka Excellence at Regional Competition
T. Hapi, Deputy Principal Cultural Capacity, Tumuaki Tuarua - Āheinga Ahu
On Thursday 19th June, Rotorua Boys’ High School was proudly represented by our two kapa haka rōpū—Raukura and Te Aitanga a Tāne—at the Regional Secondary Schools Kapa Haka Competition held at the Energy Events Centre. Both groups had trained with dedication and heart throughout their campaigns, and their performances reflected that commitment. Raukura took the stage first, delivering a sharp, polished, and emotionally powerful bracket that captivated the audience and judges alike. Their efforts were rewarded with several top placings, including 1st in Haka and 1st in Poi. A special acknowledgment must go to Florence Grace, the Kaitātaki Wāhine of Raukura, who was named Top Female Leader. Florence is also Head Prefect of Rotorua Girls’ High School and the daughter of our very own Matua Jared. Later in the day, Te Aitanga a Tāne brought their own flair to the stage with a vibrant, entertaining, and high-energy performance. A standout aspect of their set was the strong presence of junior students, many of whom were performing at the regional level for the first time. Their smiles, confidence, and pride were a clear sign of the bright future ahead for kapa haka at our kura. It was a day of mana, celebration, and cultural excellence. Both rōpū should be incredibly proud of their achievements. Kapa Haka is not just alive at Rotorua Boys’ High School—it is thriving. We would also like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the tutors and those who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to support our students. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa.
