G. Hunt, Director of Golf Academy
The Golf Academy for our new players officially commenced on Monday, February 24th, and we extend a warm welcome to Asante Conley, Clay Simpson, Maihi Tangitu, Maximilian Jensen, Oliver Guy, Roman Mead, Te Amo Taurima, Xavier Smith, and Isileli Taylor Funaki.
Under the guidance of our mentors, Ken Allan and Ken Smith, the players spent their first two hours on the range focusing on fundamental swing techniques, including grip, posture, and stance. The primary goal for our new players is to gain their official handicaps and work towards securing a place in the John Manihera Memorial Tournament in May or the Eagles tournament in August.
Meanwhile, our senior team, fresh off their Super Eight Schools Tournament victory in February, now turn their attention to the Bay of Plenty Golf Championships in Ōpōtiki on March 4th. This event promises strong competition, particularly from Ōpōtiki College, which boasts a talented group of junior players.
New Ranking Competition
This year, we are introducing an internal ranking competition within the academy. Players can challenge up to two spots above them, with the top three securing a place in the National Secondary Schools Championship in Wellington this August. This initiative aims to foster a competitive yet supportive environment, motivating players and preparing them for high-pressure situations.
With such a talented group of golfers, I look forward to seeing the results in the coming months.
