H. Lockwood, Deputy Principal - Student Support, Tumuaki Tuarua- Taunaki Ākonga

Kia ora students and whānau of  Raukura 2025,

My name is Hamish Lockwood and I am the Deputy Principal - Student Support, Tumuaki Tuarua- Taunaki Ākonga 2025. A huge Mihi to all our whānau of Raukura and especially to the young men at Rotorua Boys High School. I look forward to again fulfilling my role in 2025 and relishing the opportunity to help improve student outcomes.

Attendance

Students, parents, and staff are continually working together to improve the attendance rate for our school so this is a timely reminder of our Absentee protocol for 2025. An emphasis on being at school regularly and punctually will ultimately drive towards enhancing the academic profile for each student.

Should your son not be attending school for any length of time, there are a number of options below which can be utilised to inform the school of his absence;

1.     Contact Absentee Hotline  – (07) 349 5137

2.     Phone or email the Dean

3.     Written explanation for House Group Teacher on his return to school

Early Notification

We are operating an Early Notification system whereby Parents / Caregivers will receive a message via text or email informing that their son is absent from school without explanation.  The message will be sent on the morning of absence and his records automatically adjusted on return message from Parents / caregivers.  To enable the programme to function effectively, please notify the school office to confirm the mobile and/or email address you would like this message delivered to.

Reminder: that school starts at 8.45am sharp for House Group, please ensure your son is on time ready to start his school day.

90% plus “Student Attendance” School wide target

As a school we are striving to improve students' attendance, in particular  -  regular attendance. This is defined by the Ministry of Education as  attending more than 90%, which is an average of 9 days a fortnight.

To date our school is sitting at 58% of students who are attending 90% plus of the time. Therefore as a Kura and with whānau support we want to improve the regular attendance of our young men. To give more clarity around absentee reason the below chart gives an explanation of what counts as present towards a students attendance and against a students attendance:

Student Vehicles 2025

The use of a motor vehicle by a student to travel to and from school is a shared decision with the parents or caregivers of the students concerned..

  1. Students wishing to drive to school must park in the student car park on school grounds. The  only access for vehicles in and out of school is through the back gate.

  2. Students may not leave in vehicles during period times, which will impact on student learning. (unless justified by parents or caregivers).

  3. Students are responsible for their own vehicles and bring at their own risk. They are expected to have a Legal licence to travel to and from school.

  4. Student Vehicle pass sticker must be stuck on the back left of the vehicle

All vehicles must be registered with Mr Lockwood Deputy Principal.

Please complete the following form to register your car 2025:

Leadership

It is an important year for our young men to step out of their comfort zone and strive to become a future Leader here at Raukura. There are many opportunities for students to achieve these goals and I encourage students to be involved in as many extracurricular activities both in and out of school as possible.

Further Leadership opportunities 2025

Spirit of adventure, Hillary Outdoor Pursuit Centre, Y Lead Conference, Year 11 Leadership Camp, Outward Bound, Year 9 Waikato Young Leaders day, Duke of Edinburgh and many more.

Please keep up to date with photos on our RBHS facebook page.
