Rugby

Carolyn Katu —

Like all codes, Rugby was greatly affected by Covid.

Instead of defending our 15 aside title for a third season, we played six rounds of 10 aside in two teams - U18 and U16 (pictured above). We were grateful to again have the services of coach Jimi McLean and also welcomed Staleon Takuira who coached the U16 team. We again, were fortunate to have Mr Dender referee games both home and away as well as Miss Tamati who travelled away, with the U18’s.

Both teams recorded wins and loses but all rugby players are to be commended for the growth displayed throughout the season. For some, especially all our newbies, it was an opportunity to understand the game better and work on newly developed skills. For our experienced players, it was a sense of resilience and of finishing the season after a hard season filled with lots of unknowns. What we do know is that we have some incredibly talented students who have a passion for rugby and I can’t wait for the 2021 season to defend our title and continue building on the gains from this year.

Our Rugby Prizegiving will take place in Term 4, but we also acknowledge our Year 13 leavers for their contribution to rugby over the years - Casey Flavell-Campbell, Trinity Nikora, Salaseini Kaitani, Finess Johannson, Kishona Thapa-Chettri, Denise Ruri, Whetumarama Maniapoto-Heurea, Wairua Tapara and Te Aomihi Williams.
