Police Studies Noho Marae - Waiatuhi Marae - 11th & 12th February 2021
Police Studies is entering its fourth year with over 90 schools in New Zealand teaching the course. Together with students from Rotorua Boys' High School, we held our annual noho marae with members of the Rotorua Police to learn the Police PRIMED values and to start working on skills that will make effective Police officers.
On Day 1, we learned what PRIMED stands for and then broke off into teams to participate in different Adventure Based Learning activities, developing self and interpersonal skills. In the afternoon, we held a parents hui where students and parents heard more about what the girls would be doing this year. That evening, students broke off into smaller groups and role played what the PRIMED values would look like.
On Friday morning, students were up early with Mark Enright who came in at 6am to put them through their paces with Physical Training. Following this, we had 3 new recruits who came out to speak to us about the recruitment process and how they have found the job so far. Thank you to Constable Kyra Steiner, Constable Shonit Chandra and Constable Strauss Boom for taking the time out to speak with us. Our camp finished with Inspector Steve Bullock, the acting District Commander visiting to perform the ceremony for the Solemn Undertaking whereby students received their Police pins.
At the end of our noho marae, two students from RGHS and RBHS were presented with a PRIMED award for demonstrating some or all of the Police values at camp - Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Commitment to Maori and the Treaty of Waitangi, Empathy and Diversity. Congratulations to our first recipient of this award - Danisha Te Kaawa. Thank you to our Police Mentor, Inspector Nic Cooney for organising police personel who were in attendance.
