various —

Term 2 has brought on our winter sports and our teams are now in full swing. Please watch our sports pages to see all the action, results and when our teams are playing.

For the first time in two years (due to covid) we have been able to run our RGHS Cross Country Champion event here at school, which was a very successful day. We have a new breed of Year 9 runners and they are very good at what they do.

Junior Girls Champion Sahara Katene run an amazing race and at good speed. Amara Chrisohoou come in a very credible 2nd and Kiara Hunia in 3rd place.

In the intermediate age group Steffany de Silva took first spot followed by Frances Hazeldine and Anna Olsen.

Our Senior girl’s event was won equally by Sofia Rossi-Baker and Alysa Webster with Maia Jenner taking 3rd place.

Our Overall House Champions for the day was KARENGA HOUSE followed by Rukuwai, Hinemoa and Rangiuru

BOP Cross Country Championship

Sahara Katene and Renee Price then went on to compete in the BOP Cross Country Championship earlier this week. Sahara finished 2nd and Renee a very in 6th place. In the cold, strong winds and rain these two girls did and amazing job. Well done to you both.

Both girls will now compete at the Waikato BOP champs and the NZSS Cross Country Championship later in the year, so watch this space.

RUGBY UPDATE

The Chiefs Manawa Girls 1st XV rugby competition got underway and the Rautāwhiri 1st XV are stoked to be playing against some top teams from throughout the BOP, Waikato and Taranaki. Our season started with RGHS taking on Tauranga Girls College. In very wet conditions, TGC just pipped us to win the game 15 - 10. We have Hamilton Girls in the next day or so, which will be a tough game against the reining National Champions. However, if you want to be the best, you have to play the best.

Our U16 team have had 3 wins from 3 games beating Trident College, Papamoa College and Mt Maunganui College. We have a very young U16 team made up mostly of Year 9’s and Year 10’s. They are training hard every week and we are excited to see how the season ends up.

Both teams are coached by Richie Francis and are managed by Meriana Tamati and Carolyn Katu.

1ST XI Football

This week our team faced Lakes High in a home game. For the first time we had a near full-strength team, with the vast majority of players available to play, returning from injuries and other commitments. As a result, our team controlled the game from the start and never let go of it. It was great to see how much the girls enjoyed some well-earned success following the first two warm-up games of the season. Even better that the girls remained humble and motivated, despite a clear victory of a 13 – 0 score line. Five players scored goals, with 2 players scoring a hat-trick. We look forward to facing the Lakes team again later this season.

Thanks to the coaches, parents, teachers and managers for their work to support this talented and keen team.

BADMINTON

Badminton at RGHS starts with a Tuesday lunchtime hit for everyone who wants to chill and enjoy exercising while chatting with friends. Sport Bay Of Plenty has stepped up and offered free coaching sessions and match play on a Tuesday night. This has been a fantastic opportunity for meeting new friends from other schools as well as learning skills and strategies of the game. If you are interested come on a Tuesday lunchtime to find out more about it.

Central BOP Junior Secondary School qualifier was held last week and our team of five played exceedingly well, coming second.
