Year 9

Our Year 9 students have been learning dances in the genre of Hip Hop and Lyrical. This has enabled them to develop their movement vocab and develop their skills in choreography. Imaginative movement sequences were developed in smaller groups towards the end of the rotation that were performed with confidence to their peers.

Year 10

The Year 10 students have made incredible learning progress during the first half of this year. They have learned about the basic techniques and movements associated with numerous dance genres. These students responded particularly well to Musical Theatre and Jazz. Their ability to understand the Elements of Dance and incorporate these into their own dance sequences has been rewarding to see. I have really enjoyed teaching these students and wish them all the best for the remainder of the year in their new options.

Year 11

These students are currently working through the new NCEA Level 1 Dance Pilot Programme. As one of only five schools in the country to try this new learning structure has been exciting. Students have worked hard to choreograph a duet dance based on a Pouwhenua and reflected on the process. They have started to learn a Jazz sequence and are currently working on a research project. I am proud of the progress they are making.

Xecute

Our school dance crew Xecute has been working hard under the guidance of their choreographers Keeley Carter-Conroy, Dee Jay Selwyn, Grace Hemana and Ngatahi Webster-Tarei. The team is looking forward to performing at the NZ Dance Made Regional Competition in late August.
