Across the Year 11 Dean's Desk

Trish Pike —

From surfing trips to Mt. Maunganui, to 40 kms of tramping through the Whirinaki forest, term 1 really showed the level of enthusiasm and motivation our girls have shown in all sorts of extracurricular activities.

From surfing trips to Mt. Maunganui, to 40 kms of tramping through the Whirinaki forest, term 1 really showed the level of enthusiasm and motivation our girls have shown in all sorts of extracurricular activities. Despite the rocky start to classroom timetabling, I would like to thank our girls for showing resilience and patience when times called for it.

Academically, the majority of our girls are managing themselves well in class, working hard in various subject areas and maintaining a strong focus on attaining their NCEA internals for the year. As a result we are seeing girls tracking well, with most of our girls self-tracking, self-managing and generally maintaining a good level of positive behaviour for learning.

In saying that, it is also that time of the year when some Year 11s around the country, not just our kura, are presently feeling the pressures of NCEA internals. “Am I doing enough?”, “Am I working hard enough?” These are just two of many common and anxious thoughts that some of our girls may be feeling. Let’s reassure them that, as long as they are attending their classes, working hard and staying on task - then their ‘best’ is sure to come through. The learning they receive lies not ‘only’ in the ‘credits’ they work hard to earn, but also in the journey in between. The wide range of trials and tribulations our girls are experiencing now are where they are gaining the richest learning experiences.

Testing their strength of character, building on positive mindset growth as they continue to face and overcome a wide range of challenges. Which are very common for teenagers at this age. With continued support, patience and encouragement, our girls can overcome anything.

Attendance Tracking:

My attendance track record between the houses is super close, however well done to Rangiuru house for having the best attendance record by the end of term 1 of 87.3%. I am looking forward to seeing which house group will take the lead at the end of term 2. I would also like to send out a special reminder to all whanau, it is that time of the year when attendance rate will start to fall, please ensure you CONTACT our school office when your daughter will be absent from school for any reason. Our front office staff, whanau teachers or myself (Dean) is more than happy to justify your daughter’s absence - providing we hear an explanation from you.
