Carol Holt —

With our New Year starting and lots’ of positive changes in place, we have had a very busy Term 1.

Our NEW but old Houses were re- established and the following staff were placed to lead their Houses’ to victory in 2021

Rangiuru House = Rikirae Hohepa
Karenga House = Mereana

Rukuwai House = Pre Jennings
Hinemoa House = Kylie Hill

RGHS Athletic Sports

Our first event on the 2021 calendar and up for the taking was the annual Athletic sports competition. With a new sea of colour, lots of enthusiasm, sun shining and happy faces, a great day was had by all the athletes and staff involved. We started with a March pass of all four houses and what a sight? Lots of chanting, good volume and lots of mana for the houses these girls represent. Marched on by their House leaders for 2021 in the normal hearty fashion, its’ so awesome to be a part of.

The day produced some amazing results and the girls had a fun but serious day. The following girls have emerged as our 2021 Athletic champions in their respective grades and ages groups:
Junior Girls Champion:  Amara Chrisohoou
Intermediate Girls Champion: Mekura Papuni
Senior Girls Champion:  Sonya Cropp

After the lunch break we were privileged to watch some amazing chants and you could see the hours each house had put into the preparation of each chant, with such little time too I must add. Well rehearsed lyrics, humour and polished actions made the judges descions extremely difficult. The winning chants were earned and the order of the merits were as follows:
1st = Karenga
2nd = Rukuwai
3rd = Rangiururu
4th = Hinemoa

RGHS Swimming Sports

The next big event on the Calendar was the School Swimming Sports and as always’ there was some fierce competition in the pool. We are privileged enough to have some very accomplished swimmers in our school. The action in the pool for the relay events were hotly contested and the number of girls participating was at its best, so congratulations to you all and thank you for another wonderful day.

Our Swimming Champions for 2021 are:
Junior Girls:   Shekinah Maxwell
Intermediate Girls:   Kasey Taikato
Senior Girls:  Sofia Rossi-Baker

The house chants seemed to have moved to another level since Athletics and the girls were really on n today. You could see more time and effort had been put into the continuity of the whole performance and the delivery of the message was more clear and procise.

The order was as follows
1st = Rukuwai
2nd = Karenga
3rd = Hinemoa
4th = Rangiuru

Thank you to all the staff involved for all your hard work and it was great to see so many parents in support of their children, at both days.

Following on from these two events, we had students attend the BOPSS and Waikato BOP Athletic Championships with the following results:

BOPSS Championship

Nikau Chater - Junior Girls Javelin 1st place
Frances Hazeldine - Intermediate Girls Discus 3rd Place

Waikato/BOP Championship
Frances Hazeldine - Intermediate Girls Discus 5th Place

BOPSS Swimming Results
Kasey Taikato  - 5th = 50m Freestyle & Backstroke 6th 50m Freestyle and 7th 50m Butterfly

AWESOME EFFORT GIRLS WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU!

Summer Tournament Week

During Summer Tournament week we had girls representing the school at Rugby 7’s, Waka Ama, and BOPSS Swimming, Athletics and Basketball.

Rugby 7’s is in its rebuild stages and the experienced gained at the tournament is pivotal in the growth and development for the future. The girls had a great three days with mixed results.

What an amazing event this is with schools attending from all over New Zealand including several small rural schools and a large number of Kura from around the country as well. This event is so well organised and the atmosphere is electric and great to be a part of.

We had some very good results from all our paddlers at Waka ama and this sport too, is in its rebuild phase at our school. Congratulations to the following students and teams:

  • Mihimanawa Mihaka won a silver medal in the J16 W1250m race
  • Our J19 500m turn in the plate Division won a Bronze Ribbon

Basketball

Firstly Congratulations to Alyssa Webster and Carly Ohia for making the NZ U16 selection camp and Dekoda Roberts for making the NZ U17 selection camp.

Three teams represented us at the 3x3 Nationals held in Auckland. The girls had a great time played some very good basketball. Thanks heaps to Sue, Darryl and Hereana Roberts for all your hard work getting the girls to Auckland and ensuring everything run smoothly. The final placings are as follows:
Junior A placed 5th
Senior A2 placed 5th
Senior A1 placed 11th

RGHS Touch

Our Senior Girls team travelled to Whakatane to compete in the BOPSS Touch Tournament. We played in the A grade draw and had a day of fast intense touch. Thank you to Pirihira and Neven for organising and running the team for the day. Thank you also to Katarina Rauwhero and x RGHS pupil who kindly filled in as our coach for the day. We could not have done it without you. The team finished in 3rd place after a long hot, hard day of Touch, so well done girls.

Last Wednesday we then travelled back to Whakatane to compete in the BOPSS Mixed touch tournament with RBHS. We entered 2 teams into the event and both teams run really well. We finished 1st in division 1 and 3rd in division 2. Both teams played with heart and the final out-come was very satisfying. Thank you to Maurice Stone RBHS, Pai Tahiruorangi RBHS and Ngawini Northcroft for all your help on the day. WE sure did need the both of you

Ki O Rahi

While our mixed teams with RBHS did not get an opportunity to compete at the BOPSS championship, as it was cancelled, we have still been invited to attend the NZ Ki O Rahi Championship, being held in the far North, the first week of the school holidays. Good luck to the team and management. I will keep you up -dated through face-book with results.

GIVE IT HEAPS AT NATIONALS

Our winter teams have all been sorted and are ready to go when term two starts.

Have a good break, keep safe and see you all after the holidays.

RUGBY 7’S - Te Ika a Maui - North Island Secondary Schools Tournament

RGHS fielded two development teams (U15 and U19) in the two day tournament in Mount Maunganui. Our teams were coached by the BOP Rugby Womens Development Officer - Kendra Reynolds and Lisa Appert who travelled from the Mount to coach our girls. The tournament gave the girls an opportunity to develop their skills against good competition. Thank you to Miss Tamati for helping with Rugby 7’s this year. We have some talented up and coming rugby players and we encourage them all to continue with rugby 10’s and 15 aside which we are moving into in Terms 2 and 3.

We welcome to the coaching team Matua Richie Francis, who has a wealth of coaching experience and Matua Bam Whare, who is stepping in to assist with strength and conditioning/fitness.
