Year 13 Physical Education, Sport Leader and Tourism Rafting Trip 2021

In week 6 our year 13 PE, Sport Leader and Tourism classes had the amazing experience of being guided down Okere Falls by the awesome team at Rotorua Rafting. The trip was a collaboration between our Social Sciences and Physical Education departments that allowed students to gain credits in both Tourism and Physical education.

As well as having a fantastic time facing fears and rafting the world’s highest commercially rafted waterfall, our students also gave back to the local environment by planting hundreds of native plant seeds that will be used to regenerate native plants alongside the Kaituna river.

A special thanks goes out to Sam Sutton and the team at Rotorua Rafting for their support with this project and the team at AWWA who sponsored us generously with swimwear and underwear.

Year 12 Physical Education and Sport Leader Mountain Biking 2021

In week 7 our Year 12 PE and Sport Leader classes headed out for mountain biking trips on the world class trails of the Whakarewarewa Forest. Students had been training hard at school in the weeks leading up to the trip and studying up on fitness training methods and safety management for outdoor activities. These two classes should be so proud of their performance on the final assessment day with a high number of excellence and merit grades being achieved - and everyone having a fantastic time enjoying our stunning local environment.

A special thanks to Mark Leishman from Black Dirt Collective coaching for your help in the forest, Mountain Bike Rotorua for our bike hire and Ka Pai Kai for our lunch delivery to Waipa.

Year 9 Duathlon

All Year 9 classes during have been training towards their duathlon (2.4k run and a 400m swim) as part of their Term 1 Physical Education programme. During week 8, our students ran from RGHS to the Rotorua Aquatic Centre and then swam 400m. Students participated in a safety walk prior to their duathlon day to raise awarness around being a safe pedestrian.

The duathlon encourages students to engage in regular physical activity as well as to have an open mindset about doing things that they find challenging. Well done to everyone who gave it a go and to all of our Year 13 big sisters who acted as marshalls and support crew during their study class.

We would like to say a big mihi to Awwa Period Underwear who sent us 30 pairs of period underwear products to distribute to girls who may have otherwise not been able to participate in water activities. Their generous contribution has removed some of the barriers to participating.

Year 10 Sport Performance

On Tuesday 9th March our year 10 Sport Performance class travelled out to Waipa to help out at the Primary and Intermediate Schools RATS Duathlon. This year there were over 550 primary students participating over 3 different courses. Our sport performance students were set out around the courses and spent the day assisting race organisers by ensuring children are staying on the course, supporting and encouraging them during their race and assisting them if they may suffer an injury.

The weather was amazing and we thoroughly enjoyed our day. It was a great opportunity for our students to give back to our local community and also get a taste of what goes on behind the scenes and during a large event.

We had some awesome feedback from Grant Utteridge who was the event organiser. “I must say I was very impressed with the girls. They were extremely supportive and understanding of the young competitors and were very enthusiastic and positive. They were also all very polite and helpful and a credit to your School.”- Grant Utteridge (Event Organiser).

A very big thank you to all the sport performance students involved.
