Pink Shirt Day

Julie Teao —

Rāutawhiri proudly supported Pink Shirt Day on Friday 20 May 2022, where staff and students were encouraged to Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying! Bullying in Aotearoa is a real problem.

We have the third-highest rate of school bullying out of 36 OECD countries and those bullied are far more likely to experience mental health issues.

Pink Shirt Day works to reduce bullying by celebrating diversity in all its forms and supporting schools, workplaces and communities to be safe, supportive, welcoming and inclusive for everyone. To celebrate this important kaupapa we held a free sausage sizzle, amazing race, diversitea morning tea for staff, whanau activities, and staff and students were given the opportunity to pledge to be Upstanders and not Bystanders. We also fundraised to support the Mental Health Foundation by holding a mufti day with best dressed in pink prizes and raising $270.
