Creatives in Schools

Creative Arts welcomes the amazing Fiona Collins to our department as a Creative in Schools. Fiona has been working with our Pasifika students in preparation for PBN (see article below). She is also working with students on creating theatre from their own stories and has organised dance workshops and discussions for Samoan Language week. It is an honour to have her in our kura and we thank her for her mahi and all the energy and creativity she brings.

The senior Creative Arts students were lucky enough to attend the incredibly entertaining and polished performance of the musical, Chicago, by John Paul College.

Not only was the show entertaining but it was inspiring for all those with a passion for Theatre, music and dance.

Dance

Dance classes have been going well this year. We now have two dance teachers which has meant that the teaching load has been spread and more variety is available to the students. Our focus for Term 2 has been different based on the year level of each student.

Our Year 9 students have learned a combination movement sequence and are now learning about different strategies that they can use to choreograph dance. Year 10 students have learned about multiple dance styles including Ballet, Jazz, Musical Theatre, Hip Hop and Contemporary dance. These students have now started choreographing group dance sequences using a brief.

Our senior students have also been learning different dance genres - in depth and have been working on choreographic structures to develop motifs and ideas for movement. Increasing literacy within our subject is something we have been working hard on and we are seeing the benefits of doing this through our students' work.
