Rototuna High Schools

Korero From Fraser

We are well into Alert Level 3 lockdown now with an uncertain few weeks ahead of us so I want to discuss the opportunities we have in front of us and how we can make the most of them.

I hope you and all your whānau are safe and well. I know this unprecedented global situation has had and will continue to have a huge impact on us all in positive and negative ways. As a school we want to support our community and whānau so let us know if we can help out.

We have been enjoying the opportunity the lockdown has presented us to further develop the use of our online learning platform to deliver connected, authentic and flexible learning programmes. We have seen many success stories with some previously disengaged students really enjoying a new approach to all learning, capable learners who are relishing the flexibility and ability to access learning at any time and staff who are mastering digital tools that can assist with both engagement and improved learning outcomes.

We have talked as a leadership group about the challenges some students and staff have faced with the sudden decision to deliver learning online. We fully acknowledge that things aren’t going perfectly for all learners, whānau or staff for that matter. This is a challenge too! In saying this I want everyone to remember that it is actually OK to be stuck and not be sure what is being asked of you in your learning. In fact, this should be welcomed as I would suggest that if learners can find ways to get past this initial confusion and find their way forward, real learning is about to happen! As a parent or caregiver try to avoid finding solutions for your young people straight away. Have they tried to clarify what is expected of them (contacted the teacher, or a classmate)? Where could they go to find answers or solutions? Have they got a plan for filling the ‘gaps’? These are the things you can do to really enhance the learning.

These very same feelings have been experienced by staff too and we are telling ourselves that these are the opportunities in which we really grow and learn. Please encourage resilience and try to be a coach alongside when these opportunities come along and the learning will flourish. Check out the Zoom session below for parents and caregivers to find out how to navigate our online systems.

As we are now close to 5 weeks into online learning it is our expectation that all students are fully engaging with their learning unless there are exceptional circumstances that prevent this from happening. Where we have a concern about this, Learning Advisors are making contact to make sure we understand any barriers. A learner choosing not to engage is not OK and we really appreciate your support to address this as best you can.
