Nau mai haere mai Rototuna e te Whānau,

Over the last two weeks there has been a lot happening: cross country across both schools, a market day held by Year 11 Haumi students, and one of our manukura (student leaders) representing Waikato youth at the Techweek in Taupō. Articles about each event are included in this week’s newsletter.

The beginning of June represents the changeover from Semester 1 to Semester 2 learning programmes at Senior High. In preparation for moving into Semester 2 we want your young person to have choices about what they are learning, support specialisation as they move into Level 3 NCEA, and have the opportunity to continue to experience connections between subjects that can deepen learning experiences.

Year 13 students have already been asked to confirm the subjects they chose at the start of the year. We have taken this approach in order to support Level 3 specialisation and reduce any stress associated with picking up something new.

For Year 11 and 12 students the selection process will include choosing two modules and three specialist subjects for the remainder of the year. These courses will give your student the opportunity to achieve credits at Level 1 and 2 NCEA depending on their learning needs. Additionally, there is an opportunity for Year 12 students to apply and be considered for Level 3 courses if they have demonstrated mastery at Level 2.

We will be running Iwi assemblies that outline the processes for your young person. Please make sure to contact your student’s Kaiārahi | Whānau advisor if you have any questions. There will also be an opportunity to discuss their choices and pathways at Whānau conferences. In the meantime you will find more details, and a link to the selection coursebook, on the website.
