Impact Projects at RSHS

At RSHS, Impact Projects involve real-world, authentic, integrated learning in a way which is meaningful and passionate to each student. Every Wednesday, students work on their project, addressing an authentic problem and how this has an impact in our community.

Around the school, many Teacher-Led, Student-Led and Independent projects take place allowing students to strive in leadership, interpersonal, communication, project management and problem-solving skills. All skills needed by future employers, thus being transferable and meaningful.

We have currently a huge variety of amazing projects on the go here at RSHS. Here is a small sample from a few different project groups, sharing their learning and how they aim to make a difference towards the community.

The Rainbow Project are a Student-Led project assisting LGBTQ+ youth to feel welcomed and accepted at school, as well as expanding educational knowledge among the general school community about LGBTQ+. To expand their work into the community, The Rainbow Project are selling rainbow ribbons and hosting a bake sale. The money raised will be donated to charity.

The Music Impact Project aims at making music more accessible through the school. Currently, their focus is 'White Noise Wednesday', which is an opportunity for anyone within the school to perform during Wednesday lunchtimes.

Upcycling; a Teacher-Led project are focusing on helping the community in many different ways. They are upcycling old furniture to sell, with the money being donated to ROC (Refugee Orientation Centre), making masks to help the community stay safe during the times of COVID-19, as well as making cushions for grandstands that have been built for the students of our school.

There is a fantastic Teacher-Led project called ‘Project Yes’ which allows students to develop their own businesses. We talked to some of these business makers and what they are working on.

  • Emily and Mia are planning to create an open mic event, called ‘One Voice’, which allows students to express themselves creatively through song, dance, poetry and more. Young voices will be used to crush the massive stereotype "We don’t understand" just because we are young. Currently, multiple dates are being planned for the event, which could continue onto the following year because ‘One Voice’ is ready to make your voice heard, and shine.

  • Sasha and Olivia are designing and screen printing t-shirts, which display positive messages for the youth. The name, 'Positive Youth' shares the goal of spreading positive messages among the youth. Currently, they are just developing ideas with the hope of selling their products on market day. If you would like to check out Sasha and Olivia’s designs you can find them on Instagram at @positive_youth.nz. All their profits will be donated to charity.

We are very proud of Impact Projects at RSHS, as they follow students’ passions and interests, with the end goal of making a difference to others and the community. Teaching us to think more about others as well as giving a sense of achievement and the feeling that we made/are making a difference along the way.
