KORERO FROM MEL

Kia ora e te whānau,

I hope this pānui (newsletter) finds you all well. We are all looking forward to the days getting longer and the weather getting warmer.

I want to take this opportunity to congratulate some of the outstanding sporting and artistic success our students have achieved recently.

Clara Chie (Y7 - Aho) won a gold medal at AIMS in the artistic junior open gymnastics. Crystal Burgess (Y8 - Aho Rei) came first in the Year 8 girls WIMS cross country and 13th at AIMS in the same event. Noah Loto (Y10 - Aho Rei) is the New Zealand Secondary Schools U15 Heavyweight wrestling champion. Grace Quigley (Y10 - Tāniko) has been selected for the Waikato U16 girls rugby team. Laura Bennett (Y10 - Te Aho Tapu) has been selected to play for New Zealand at the Football OFC U16 Championship in Tahiti next week!

In the regular Netball season, 6 of our teams made the finals and 4 were crowned champions of their grades. Congratulations to the teams 9B, 10B, Junior Prem and Prem Reserves for winning their grades and the 7A and Junior Mixed teams for making their finals. In Hockey, our Intermediate A team , Pukeko, won their competition and are WIMS Champions for the first time. Our boys 1st XI Hockey team (who have a number of Y9 & 10 students in it) won their division this year. Our Year 7 & 8 Boys WIMS Futsal team won their competition.

7 of our swimmers attended the Waikato Secondary Schools Swimming competition and all of them made their respective finals, bringing home 6 medals. Congratulations to Kahlea Norris (Y10 - Hukahuka) who went on to the NZ Open Short Course Champs and brought home 2 bronze medals.

Our AIMS games Hip Hop crew have placed 12th at AIMS. Some of these students also competed at Dance NZ Made in August. Our Jazz Troupe were announced the Yr 7 & 8 Champions and our Hip Hop team came second in their division. We hosted the Yr 7 & 8 Band Slam last week and while our band, The Crispy Doughnuts, didn’t place, Harry Gillies (Y8 - Tāniko), won Best Guitarist. Our RHS Jazz Band were awarded a Gold award for their performance at the recent Waikato Itinerant Music Festival.

Finally, we have been involved in 4 school sports exchanges this year, with Papamoa, Albany and Mission Heights, and have won each of these exchanges.

I’d like to express my appreciation and thanks to all of these students for representing our school with such pride and putting in the hours of dedication and training to achieve at such a high level. Also, a huge thanks to all of the support people - parents, coaches, managers, sports and teaching staff. Again, this wouldn’t happen without your input, and we value you.

I’m sure there are achievements I’ve missed in this summary, if we haven’t celebrated something important on our School and Sport social media channels (both Facebook and Instagram) please let us know!

Ngā manaakitanga,

Mel
