The Raroan — Nov 14, 2019

Singing, dancing, acting, swimming, paddling, cheering… find out more about our fantastic week with the wonderful eighty-four performers who took part in the Waimea exchange, 2019.

Day 1

It was a bright and early start for our team, boarding the Interislander ferry towards Picton. After a slightly rocky crossing, laughs, jokes and excitement ensured energy levels were kept high.

The sun came out as we docked in Picton and we enjoyed a beautiful coach trip across to Nelson. We were greeted at Waimea Intermediate with a welcoming Powhiri. The air was full of anticipation as the students were paired with their billets.

Day 2

Teachers were pleased to see lots of smiling faces first thing on Tuesday morning. After hearing about the adventures of the first night, students quickly got into performance mode busily prepping for their first show at Waimea Intermediate. The hall was packed and with their billets eagerly waiting in the audience, our performers were buzzing backstage.

The first performance went off without a hitch and next up was Henley Primary School. Raroa connected well with the younger audience, finishing their first day show day on a high.

Day 3

There were a few sleepy faces on Wednesday as we hustled to get on the road for a 9.30am curtain at Brightwater Primary School. The students enjoyed performing at a scenic, country school location and received flattering feedback from the teachers who stated their visit “was the highlight of the school year”.

Our final show was at Wakefield Primary School, the oldest primary school in New Zealand (founded in 1843). Our talented team brought their A-game for the finale and were delighted with the compliments from their young audience afterwards. A quick dip in the local pool with their hosts was a fantastic way to cool off after two busy days.

Day 4

Despite the questionable forecast, the weather shone for our final full day in the Tasman. We enjoyed exploring the coastline of Kaiteriteri in kayaks and embracing the chilling waters at Anchorage Bay for a quick swim. For many it was the first time visiting this stunning part of New Zealand and it was a privilege to share this experience with them.

A quick refresh after a day at the beach and it was time for a masquerade disco hosted by Waimea Intermediate. What an amazing way to end their week!

Day 5

And just like that, another exciting exchange came to an end. There were cheerful farewells in the morning and many students have said that they plan to keep in touch. The eighty-four students we took away should be incredibly proud of how they presented themselves – we certainly are.

A heartfelt thank you to all of the teachers and staff involved in organising such a unique, character-building experience for our students. The Waimea Exchange has been running since the 1980s and we are looking forward to hosting Waimea Intermediate again next year.
