Wellington's precious water supply needs you ...

Caroline Robertson, Strategic Communications Advisor, Wellington Water —

To conserve ...

As you are aware we’ve had an unseasonably warm spring.

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) has confirmed this November as one of the driest in the last 90 years, and water demand has reached levels normally only seen in the height of summer (February / March).

To coincide with this unprecedented water demand, Wellington Water’s main treatment plants are also undergoing urgent upgrades to ensure safe and healthy water supplies.

To make sure we have enough water to last all summer long we introduced a region wide residential ban on sprinkler and irrigation systems, which came into effect on Thursday, 30 November 2017.

Though the sprinkler and unattended watering ban is for residential properties, we ask that you Watch Every Drop, and be pragmatic and responsible with any watering around your school. Please avoid watering in the heat of the day, and ensure any watering you do is effective and not wasteful.

If you are able to promote the following message to your community via your school’s website, newsletter or Facebook page this would be very appreciated:

· A message from Wellington Water - to make sure we have enough water to last all summer long, a region wide residential ban on sprinkler and irrigation systems is now in place. You can still water carefully by hand using a hose or a watering can. For more information about this ban visit wellingtonwater.co.nz

If we all do our part to look after our water now, we can enjoy it all summer long.
