Raroa Team off to 'Tournament of Minds' National Finals!
Last Saturday, 21 students from Raroa took part in the Wellington Regional 'Tournament of Minds' Competition.
The students competed against schools from Greater Wellington, Kapiti Coast and Wairarapa. They completed two challenges: firstly, a spontaneous unknown challenge that required the use of higher level thinking skills and teamwork within a 4 minute period.
The second challenge was called the Long Term Challenge. This was chosen by each team 6 weeks ago and they presented their solution to this challenge in a dramatic way to an audience and to the judges last Saturday.
Sound easy right BUT... they had to
- Work within a limited budget
- Work in a team of 7!
- Only have 10 minutes to present
- Only use approved recyclable materials
- Perform within a 3m x 3m square
- Focus and be marked on 2 chosen presentation skills
- Write a script
- Make costumes
- Make props and sets
- do it all within 6 weeks...
BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, do it without any help, feedback or advice from anyone - parents and teachers included! The students thrived on working with this extra dimension!
Every team member was an outstanding representative for our school and the teams met the many challenges they faced with enthusiasm and perseverance showing competence in using high-level thinking skills.
HUGE UPS also go to Rosa, Rebecca, Jack, Holly, Finn, Kate and Olivia who WON THEIR SECTION! This team will be representing Wellington Region at the NATIONALS on Saturday 24 September. All the best for that - we know you will do Raroa proud!
Congratulations to all the students involved and thanks to the large and enthusiastic parent body!
Special thanks to Sally Robinson, Amanda's mother, who was one of the judges at the Tournament, which was required as part of our participation.
