Coastal Quilter’s Competition

The Rāroan —

Coastal Quilters is a club that gathers together to learn and teach each other quilting skills and techniques. It was created in 1988 by Marge Hurst and Sue Bracken.

The club set up a competition for anyone in their guild to make an artwork that uses a certain fabric in the design.

Students and two teachers from Rāroa Intermediate were invited by the Coastal Quilters to judge their competition.

The judging criteria was:

  • Be a finished item size no larger than 1m2

  • To be 2D or 3D and does not have to be a traditional quilt

  • It does need to include quilting

Everyone who submitted an entry did an awesome job and really displayed their skills well. During the judging the judges examined the quilts separately and picked their top three. They then debated over the ones that really caught their eye. They also discussed the different aspects of each one. It was very hard for them to choose first, second and third place because of the amazing quality. After a lot of discussing and picking apart the details a conclusion was made. All the judges were very impressed and loved every entry.
