Lines of Communication and Student Welfare

The Rāroan —

The systems for pastoral care and support are extensive at Rāroa. We take a team approach to addressing the needs of ALL individuals.

The first point of call for parents is the classroom teachers. In most cases the classroom teacher can support and assist where required. Parents are generally very respectful of teachers, knowing that they are in class throughout the day and may not be able to reply to emails immediately.

Working alongside each teacher is a Team Leader, who is also there to support the teachers and parents of students in their team.

Team Leaders:

Whai Wāhi - Aaron Wright

Mōhio - Abby Smalley

Manawanui - Leah McKenzie

Motuhake - Ethan Porteous

Whakaute - Clemmie Westlake

Each team has a Deputy Principal responsible for overseeing student welfare, amongst other things, and providing an extra layer of support and guidance.

Sam Watson oversees Mōhio and Manawanui

Matt Boucher oversees Whakaute and Motuhake

Dave Gillies overseas Whai Wāhi and Parekareka/DPE

There are also several other areas of the school which support the welfare of students Including the Wellbeing Team (provides group and individual wellbeing support), GATE and Learning Support Teams, Whānau support, Pasifika support and additional support for students where English is their second language. These programmes have criteria for student participation and are referred by the classroom teacher.

The best person to contact if you have any concerns about your child is the classroom teacher. If the matter is urgent and serious you may also contact the Team Leader or Deputy Principal looking after your child's team.

Student welfare is at the core of what Rāroa does as a school. With a systematic and organised approach, we endeavour to provide support to meet the many needs of our many students. It takes a village to raise a child, and we are here to work together with parents and caregivers during your child's time at Rāroa.
