NZAIMS Games 2017

The Raroan —

Swimming, Gymnastics, Indoor Bowls, Football, Netball and Cross Country. This year, Raroa took 60 students to compete in the annual AIMs Games in Tauranga.

An incredible week away with many proud moments for Raroa. Torrential rain, strong winds and sub 10 degrees temperatures made us Raroans feel right at home!

An incredible Medal Count

3 x Gold medals - Jessie Cunningham (Gymnastics), Lucy Jurke (Cross Country), Year 8 girls Cross Country

2 x Silver medals - Raroa Girls 1st XI, Sarah Hay (Cross Country)

1 x Bronze medals - Lucy Jurke, Lola Byrne, Kate Howell and Tayla Adamson. (Cross Country)

5 x Team Player medals - Lara Smith (Football), Jacob Butel (Football), Jordan Keene (Indoor Bowls), Jessie Cunningham (Gymnastics) and Emma Herbert (Swimming)

Individual Competitors

Emma Herbert achieved 12 personal bests in her swimming events (beating PBs from Tuesday again in the finals on Wednesday). She placed in the top ten in 3 out of her 6 events - 6th for 200m backstroke, 8th 200m freestyle and 9th in 100m backstroke. Another incredible feat when she was up against over 400 other swimmers.

Jordan Keene competed in the singles indoor bowls tournament, winning all 4 of his games on day one to qualify for day two. Jordan had an interview with one news, which you can read about here and watch here

Jessie Cunningham scored a total of 26.6 out of 30 for her three apparatus in Rhythmic Gymnastics, taking home a well earned gold medal.

Teams
The Cross Country was up first on Sunday 10th September. With 19 students competing in this event, we were ecstatic to come away with 8 medals! Lucy Jurke won GOLD for the year 7 girls, 11 seconds behind the record time on the course at Waipuna Park. Sarah Hay received SILVER for the year 8 girls. On top of this success, the year 7 girls won team bronze and the year 8 girls won team gold, continuing their success from team gold last year.

Netball also started on Monday, with our girls playing their hearts out to make it into the A grade later in the week. They finished coming 31st out of 122 teams. A massive achievement in this difficult tournament for a new team from Wellington.

Football started on Monday 11th September.

The boys had a tough 6 games in the pool play, including an epic 5-0 win over Chisnallwood Intermediate. Our boys adapted well to playing on muddy, rain soaked grass rather than the much preferred artificial turf. It was great to see the boys come together as a team and put a lot of what they had practiced into game situations. The competition was tough but that didn’t stop some fantastic passing plays, as well as some outstanding goals - namely a couple of huge long range shots from Jeremy Chan, Luca Adams (from a corner kick) and captain Ben O’Connor, as well as a superb hat-trick from Lachie Macgregor. Our Team Player of the Tournament went to “Solid-as-a-Rock” Jacob Butel who completely held our back line together and pulled out a magical ability to throw the ball in from the side right into the goal box. A secret weapon we were all pretty surprised with happy to have discovered.

The girls had an incredible week, winning 8/9 pool games and drawing one, including a 2-1 win over St Mary’s, who had been playing together for a season and were undefeated before meeting us on the field on Day 2. The girls beat Baradeen 2-0 to make it into the semi-finals, and then beat Murray’s Bay 1-0 to defend their gold title in the final. A loss of 2-0 to Taradale in the final saw our girls come away with SILVER! The girls conceded a total of 3 goals in the entire tournament. Nice job Liv Empson! Article here.
