Chess Achievements @ Rāroa

The Rāroan —

Thanks and congratulations to the following students who, between them, have represented Rāroa in three recent chess tournaments - Tawa Exchange, the Inter-school Tournament, and the Chess Power Tournament: Toby Shannon, Arham Jain, Lithesh Udayakumar, Saad Malik, Will Steward, Ira Crampton, Nikhil Jupudi, Oli Stacey, Culain Kelly and Felix Fu.

They all represented the school with pride, showing our ASPIRE values in action. Thanks to parents Ian, Sue and Carl for your help and support for the teams.

Inter-School Chess Tournament

Both Rāroa teams played well throughout the day and got off to a great start in winning their first round 1 matches. A parent helper commented after Round 1 that what a great bunch of kids the Rāroa teams were to play against, and they appreciated their sportsmanship. The competition was tough with 15 Intermediate teams competing and in the end Rāroa A finished 3rd and Rāroa B finished 8th. Well played to both teams and congratulations to Toby, Arham, Lithesh and Saad for receiving the bronze medals for Rāroa A and for being the first team from Raroa Intermediate to medal at a recent chess tournament. Special mention to Lithesh who won all 6 matches to go unbeaten in the tournament! Both teams represented Rāroa with good sportsmanship, competitiveness and also looked the part in the new Rāroa sports uniforms!

It was a great day of chess and a great experience for the boys to be a part of.

Chess Power Tournament

Five students represented Rāroa at the Chess Power Tournament at Berhampore School and finished 2nd! Merit awards were also presented to three students for winning 5 games out of 7. Congratulations to all!

Tawa Exchange

Eight of our finest chess players came up against a very strong Tawa Intermediate School. Both sides showed incredible sportsmanship, as well as some down to the wire games of chess. Rāroa snatched the victory in the end, winning 37 games to Tawas 21. Player of the match, Toby Shannon (Room 2) not only showed his impeccable chess knowledge and skill, but throughout the day, Toby was an awesome host to Tawa.
