Writing in Whai Wāhi

The Rāroan —

For writing over the past few weeks, we have been working in groups on an A-Z encyclopaedia about all things relevant to Aotearoa.

We collaborated in our groups to brainstorm topics for each letter and then divided them up to work on across the term.

With each writing piece we have to think carefully about our purpose, genre and target audience and vary this most weeks. At the end of each week we come together with our group to collate our pieces and give feedback to each other. We still have a bit to go but here are some pieces so far!

Ballad Of The Buzzy Bee

The buzzy bee, scientifically known as the murmuro apis, is a commonly known toy creature. It shows great similarity to an average bee yet, it has skin of wood, and a string attached to its nose, for easier support from peers.

The buzzy bee has wings yet it is flightless, for it is too heavy to fly. Its main form of mobility is its wheels, although unorthodox, this seems to be quite effective, for it is a very rare occurrence for a buzzy bee to be captured by its main predator, the wild toddler. Due to this, the buzzy bee had a minor overpopulation problem from the late 1940s to 1950s, but more recently, their populations have decreased for unknown reasons.

Here we see the buzzy bee in its natural habitat, the family house. It is usually found alone, though it is sometimes found in packs, trying to regroup after their toddler has grown up, and abandoned them. The buzzy bee has a timid disposition, and their main strategy to survival is to flee at the sight of danger, often when toddlers chase them around the house, this serves as both good enrichment and exercise for the toddler, assisting in its growth.

The buzzy bee is quite the intriguing creature, I simply have never seen anything like it. The most odd thing about the buzzy bee, however, is that it does not reproduce, they are made, and then just come to life, there is currently no explanation for how they just gain sentience. This seemingly magical ability to just come to life is against all known biology, and has left scientists befuddled.

The mystery of the buzzy bee is truly deep, yet they are also a majestic and beautiful creature, and a great addition to the animal kingdom.
