Year 5/6 Student Volunteer Army Kindness Project.
Spreading joy and kindness in our community during the season of Advent.
For the past few weeks Kereru and Kotuku students have been busy planning and preparing for their Volunteer Army Project Day. This means taking collective action for the care of other people in our school and wider community. First we discussed what are the values of our class, our students and our school? The students worked collaboratively to organise trips to Stillwater Gardens. Olive Estate and First Years Early Childhood Centre. They baked cupcakes and delivered them to our local police and fire station to say 'thank you for your service'. The students set up an area at the front gate to welcome children and adults each day. They painted rocks and wrote positive messages on them to leave around our community for others to find and they created Christmas cards to deliver to local businesses-phew!
Here are some student comments on their 'Day of Action':
'It felt really nice to see the smile on people's faces when we delivered the cupcakes and cards. And it felt great to bring joy to people in Richmond' by Hunter Yr 5.
'We had a fun time playing petanque with the Olive Estate residents. I think they were really happy to see us and they felt energised!' by Jakob Yr 5.
'It was nice to see the smiles on the faces of the Stillwater residents. We sang songs for them and participated in their exercises. It was fun. The residents really liked being around the kids' by Kirsten Yr 6.
Well done to all of the students in Kereru and Kotuku. Your teachers are really proud of you!
