This Week We Celebrated The Feast of Saint Paul.

Maureen Phillips —

The official Feast Day is 29 June.

Paul was one of the most important figures of the Church.  He was a zealous missionary whose evangelisation founded the Christian Church in all parts of the world. He is recognised for writing the most books of the New Testament (13 of the 27) These books played a large role in the development of Christian beliefs..

Paul was given the name Saul at birth, which was in about ad 4 in what is now Turkey. He was Jewish and initially persecuted the followers of Jesus. He would travel to synagogues and suggest that any Jew who accepted Jesus as the messiah (saviour of the Jews) be punished.  The story of Saul’s conversion to Christianity is a popular Christian story.

Following his conversion, Paul traveled over 10,000 miles proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ. His journeys on land and sea took him through present day Israel, Syria, Turkey, and Greece.

Paul believed his purpose was to preach to and to convert Gentiles (people who were not Jewish) to Christianity. His greatest impact on Christian history comes from the letters he wrote.

Our school motto comes from a letter Saint Paul wrote to the people of Philippi.  "You must shine among them like stars lighting up the sky".  This inspires us to be the very best we can be and to let our Christ light shine in the world today.

We pray that like Saint Paul, we too will continue to work unceasingly in bringing about the Good New s in our own ways – ensuring our gifts, talents and treasures shine like stars.
