Weetbix TRYathlon

My TRYathlon, By Benji HP

On Sunday morning the 19th of March it was the Weetbix kids tryathlon. I was so excited and a little bit nervous as I had not participated in this event before.

I got up, had some Milo cereal for breakfast and got my bucket ready. First I put my helmet on, next I got my t-shirt with the sticker on it. My number was 491263 and the sticker was orange, that is because orange is the colour of my age group which was 9 year olds and blue is the colour of the ten year olds and green is the colour of the seven year olds (etc). Then I got my towel to put in my bucket for the transition after the swim. I collected my goggles and swim cap too. We then loaded my bike to put on the bike rack along with my twin brothers too (who had only learnt to ride a bike 2 weeks prior!!).

We leaped into the car at around 7:00 am (very early start) and drove to Kilbirnie where a lot of other participants were already arriving and getting their bright and colourful stations organised. We saw friends from some other schools around Wellington and then gathered in the Seatoun School tent. There was a warm up to the music, which was super fun and reminded me of jump jam!

It was nearly my turn, and I was nervous about all the people I had to verse because there were 3074 kids doing it throughout the different age groups, but I knew we would all have fun as the sun was shining that day and the atmosphere was one of excitement.

It was a lot of fun because I had to walk through this blow up arch and scan a barcode that was on the sticker to put my bike in the transition area.

The transition area is a place where you put your bike. So you do the swim then you run to the transition area to put your shorts over your togs and put your Weetbix tryathlon top on, then put your helmet on which should have a sticker on it with your number on it. (like 491263) Then you walk your bike to the road bike track, and complete three laps of the bike track, which was 4 kilometres in total, then walk back into the transition area and then do a 1.5 kilometre run.

I loved watching my brothers and friends complete the race. Everyone was cheering for the athletes. What a cool experience! I’ll definitely sign up again next year!
